"Blue Moon on New Year's Eve!"
Heard the saying, "Once in a blue moon"? Just what does that mean?! It means rarely, seldom, happening every now and then, practically never... well, you get the picture.
So this year, in Dec, we will have two full moons, hence the blue moon (according to one explanation). Two full moons in a single month, a phenomenon that occurs every 2.5 years on average. Sounds rare to me. We had a full moon on Dec 2nd and the second one will be on Dec 31st, making this the first blue moon on New Year's Eve since 1990!!
Another explanation for a blue moon, according to farmers, is a 13th new moon. Usually you get 12 full moons a year but because there are extra days in some months and they add up. So you may end up with a fourth full moon in a season. For farmers to keep their season straight, they would name the extra moon blue.
But a real "blue" moon can occur if the air contains particles that are larger than usual. The particles scatter red light and give the moon a bluish tint.
And we couldn't forget about yarn and knitting...
